EXP being a combat reward only is a non sense in itself that I blame on MMORPG. I much prefer rewarding creativity, objectives, side objectives, important difficult combat and roleplay with XP.
Though I did suffer from xp withdrawal where the dm withold XP for 5 entire sessions and it sucked.

The ultimate cruelty of the universe would be for her to see a side of the t'au that makes her go "They're actually not better".
That would be soul crushing and sad :(

It's ironic how this side of the t'au is genuinely believed by many membres of their water caste, unaware of how behind the scene even if the life conditions are better, one horror is replaced by an other type of horror. The Galaxy is freaking huge, the t'au empire is no exception.
