This dehumanization is probably why it bothers you. It is part of their greater project to divide us along the lines of race, gender, and immigration status by convincing the public that some types of people are naturally inferior.

I go all out on the syllabus because I have a non-traditional grading model, which I just published on. But it is fairly easy to understand, and students really like it.

I have a full syllabus, a graphical syllabus, a recorded session of going over the syllabus on day 1 with the slides uploaded, and I go over things regularly in class. And yet at the end of the semester, there is always one student...

There's also the idea of "we're paying these students, so we can have them doing real work," and that real work is where you actually get experience that is going to help you gain skills and competency.

I tell students that the quality of internships and grad programs is often proportional to how much stipend they provide. If they are investing resources into a program, they tend to care a lot more about quality. Volunteer and even tuition-charging programs tend to be light on authentic training.
