Fanfic is how I’ve been strengthening my own writing skills literally since middle school. It’s a big old fun sandbox of a medium!

But on the other hand, no I don’t put them on the same tier as books cuz as beautifully written as they can be, they don’t have the art of editing applied, they often don’t reach the same depths I want in a book. They’re a messier, human, expression of love of a media through words.

And on one hand I get the sentiment of ‘fanfic is real writing!’ Cuz it is, it’s a unique expression of talent and love of a thing.

On one hand I get it, tweaking a creative work to get a monetary gain from it cuz we all gotta be monetizing hobbies at this point. But also you can always tell and a story with those fanfic vibes does feel a little cheaper in print…
