A bit irritating when you are running late and a baby bald eagle won't get off your walkway right outside your front door. Really? Who sits on a walkway when you can choose a boat, a light pole, or a storage container? At least he didn't poop on the walk; just on the grass. Island girl issues.#eagle

When I think of the dog days of summer, the Aleutian Islands does not come to mind. But, at 6:20 in the A.M., the temperature is a sweltering 54 degrees F., no wind, with humidity measuring 98%. There will be no chocolatier-ing today. 64 expected. Maybe the snow in the mountains will melt today.

🍜It is time for red salmon to come home to spawn. This is our favorite species for baking, frying, drying, and smoking. The eggs are beautiful. The heads are used in soups or baked to eat. Our subsistence practices teach us to take only what we need. We are ready to continue the cycle. #Indigenous

A delicately sweet berry. I will throw the juice in a homemade vinegarette. It is my favorite berry for salads and for making jelly.

We had only bumble bees until about 7 years ago when people started bringing honeybees on to the island. Grrrr. The honeybees haven't survived too well....yet. But it is happening. Invasive species. Unalaska Island, Alaska.

My best ever custard pie. It is a typical recipe but for one main ingredient. Sea gull eggs. For Alaskan Indigenous peoples, the newly popular term 'food security' has always been a thing. Subsistence, in all it's forms, feeds our bodies and our souls. #food 🍜 #subsistence is life.
