By moving beyond humans and disease models can we improve our understanding of the causes of disease and improve biomedical innovation?

.@IgAN_JBarratt says that for much of past 20 years trial landscape in IgAN has been 🌵resembling the sole remaining glomerulus in patients with IgAN.

This has been transformed by academic nephrologists and community pushing for change.

This is just one conference in one year. We travel to many in a year and over the course of a career.

How can we do better?

There aren’t necessarily easy solutions. Visibility and discussion is a first step. Interested to hear what people think about this subject.

But the climate is an emergency just like COVID-19 - posing bigger threats though they might feel less tangible, deferred as a problem for the future.

Our behaviour now however has implications for the future.

We estimated that the carbon footprint from airplane travel from attendees travelling to #ERA23 was 5808 tons.

This is the equivalent of 356 SUVs driving around the world or the annual carbon footprint of 807 Europeans.

The climate is changing and poses the biggest global threat to human health.

Much attention has been brought to the complex interrelationship between healthcare and climate change.

Nephrology has a carbon footprint too.

But what about our own?

The need for cardionephrology is established.

The question is not should we but moving towards could we, can we and will we?

How can you tell the difference between Alport syndrome and TBM?

🛑 TBM is not a diagnosis, more a syndrome or pattern of injury.

Genetics is really important.

What are the biopsy findings in Alport syndrome?

Classic EM findings are seen late in the disease.
- GBM thickening
- Podocyte effacement
- Basket weaving
November 22, 2024 at 11:01 AM
In a targeted population of children with at least one of low GFR, haematuria, positive family history or suspected FSGS or Alport on biopsy.

28% had a positive genetic test for Alport syndrome.

Alternative pathway does not need a trigger, a more primitive system, works like a guardian of the intravascular space.

Classical pathway needs a trigger.
