From what little I've read about and seen of Celeste Holm, this story doesn't surprise me at all!

'You have a trained voice,' he said. 'I'd like you to sing it as if you'd never had a lesson in your life -- a bold, farm girl voice.'
In response, Holm blurted out, 'I can call a hog!'
'I dare you,' Rodgers countered.
'So I did,' Holm recalled. 'None came. But that's how it happened.'"

"...as she headed to the stage, she fell down a short flight of steps, music flying. 'That was funny,' Rodgers told her. 'Could you do it again?' But he was concerned [after he heard her sing].

This is behind the computer table. After Rick (my late husband) had his strokes, he sometimes couldn't swallow, and he would spit stuff out. This wall was where alot of coffee ended up while he was sitting at the computer. The kitchen has to be cleared out because the floor vinyl is being replaced.

And that reminds me of a lovely scene from "Man for All Seasons," which is very apt:

Europe is now faced with the necessity of hanging together or hanging separately. They don't have much of a choice. The day will come when we may regret abandoning a Europe that we helped to build, based on the laws, treaties, and alliances, that our president is so gleefully dismantling.

With Trump acting as the shill of Putin, and Vance acting as the shill of a shill, the United States abandoned a policy that has been a success for decades, and has probably seriously damaged one of the most successful military alliances in history. And for what? Putin's smile.

30 years later, I'm sure President Zelensky is wondering why Ukraine was ever stupid enough to give up the one thing that could conceivably keep the Russian bear at bay. I'm glad to say Zelensky refused to surrender to what was basically a Mafia shake-down, and walked out.

This shows exactly what a slippery thing history can be. At the time, it seemed to be a glorious victory, on par with the collapse of the Soviet Union itself.

There were, however, a number of loose ends to tie up.

Ukraine ended up owning a portion of the Soviet Union's vast stock of nuclear weapons. Ukraine, in 1996, agreed to give up its nuclear stockpile. Ukraine handed them back to Russia, in return for economic aid and security assurances.

It's not perfect, and never will be, but it beats being a Medieval peasant.

Of course, if you choose to live (and die) like one, I can't stop you.

In these days, when alot of people seem to be willing to ignore scientific advice and scientific progress, it's important to realize that we are generally disease and pain free because we have roughly 200 years of medical progress to thank.

Dental work isn't really all that bad these days. The most painful part is having the anaesthetic injected. I kept thinking about surgeries before anaesthetics, when whiskey or opium was used, or none at all.

Coulter looks like she's in charge, but Scoresby reads her like a book, and slowly you can see the tables turn. You can see her defenses crumbling, even though she still has her hand around his throat. I love watching two competent actors running away with good material like this. Great acting!

I kept my original book club edition for sentimental reasons. It may have been one of the first items I received from the Science Fiction Book Club back in the 1970s. Maybe even the late 1960s. I was a precocious little bugger.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that! Glad to hear about the son's boyfriend, though.

I think "Fig" was Isaac Newton's middle name.
