Wouldn't your images of a banana be derived from your previous experiences with bananas? Your idea of a banana?
August 30, 2025 at 10:05 PM
But isn't that the concept of a banana in your mind? Sometimes it would be good to be in someone else's head, just for a sec, to understand their experience
😄

This is something I have thought about: is this actually a case of just using different ways/words of expressing the same thing, or is it something fundamentally different in how people think? Do you actually see a banana, like it covers part of your vision?

Not disturbing - a distraction
August 30, 2025 at 9:33 PM
This goes the other way, as well - do you hallucinate a banana when you think about it? How is that not disturbing?
August 30, 2025 at 9:32 PM
And like I said at first, I can hold the idea of something in my head, just not in a visual way and not in a textual/verbal way - just the concept of a banana.

I think this is how it works for me
August 30, 2025 at 9:23 PM
I usually also think the book is better than the film, I guess because the book usually has more information. Maybe because I'm not a visual thinker, I tend to not pick up on visual cues in films that much?
August 30, 2025 at 9:23 PM
I've also read somewhere that there's people who don't have an internal voice - I guess that's a different type of imagining that some people don't have. My internal voice is all-present, so instead of a film in my head I have like a running commentary or a soundtrack to everything.

But I think people with aphantasia experience things like this differently. One thing I've read is that some have trouble remembering visual information - like they couldn't easily describe their home or the face of a friend to someone, but I don't experience this. And I also dream in "film"
August 30, 2025 at 9:14 PM
No, I love to read! And getting the descriptions is what brings the story to life for me. Without the descriptions, I don't have an idea about what the people or the places are like. Since I can't "see" them, I need the words. But once I have the words, I have the idea of them.

This is the artist: youtu.be/ewsGmhAjjjI?...

I've seen a you tube video from an artist who explains her aphantasia and her creative process, so there are definitely visual artists with aphantasia.
August 30, 2025 at 8:40 PM
I can't "see" a film in my head when I read, but I hold the ideas, the story and the emotions it evokes.
August 30, 2025 at 8:38 PM
I think some of this is also related to how we understand "imagining things". I'd say that I have aphantasia, because I can't visualise as far as I can tell. But that doesn't mean I can't imagine things. I can't see the banana in my mind, but I can hold the idea of a banana.
