Neurodivergent rhetorician. Driven by distraction and dirty words. The circle must be broken.
And there’s more… Because I watched the first one, this one rolled in a few reels later. Student yelling at a professor that he’s a horrible teacher. Student says “I use this app and it’s teaching me more than you are!”

Another SHILL.

This time, it’s Mind Grasp.

Here’s something fun. Slipping through “fun” reels on Instagram. One pops up with what looks like a Snap vid of a professor berating students for using ChatGPT.

EXCEPT the vid is a SHILL.

For Study Fetch, which is backed by… CollegeBoard.

This is PRIME,
GRADE A,
WILDLY DANGEROUS,
STATISTICAL
BULLSHIT.

To off-handedly quip “not all instructional staff have faculty designation” is to write off THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of instructional wage earners who are NO WHERE NEAR that big ass number the article calls “average.”

I’m teaching an upper-level digital rhetoric and social change course and I made my students all pamphlet-like books in which I’m requiring they copy out quotes from readings and write discussion questions in. We’re talking about the digital but charting it materially.

Um, that’s not how “ideology” works, my guy.

Not a shocking revelation, but perennially annoying one: The Chronicle of Higher Education is the NYT of higher ed. This is not praise. 🙄

TFW this drops and you’re both embroiled in the implications of AI on/with higher education (my job) and deep into reading Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower.

Objectivity must be operationally defined as fair treatment of data, not absence of preference.

Reminds me of the weird daddy issues that bubble up in the 2009 Ray Kurzweil documentary Transcendent Man…

I’m sure @mattseybold.bsky.social takes no pleasure in being right about Ponzi austerity in higher education…

This is why AI is king, poetry is dead, and the world won’t end in fire or ice, nor with a whimper or a bang, but with a like and a repost…

So yeah. Fuck this empty rhetoric—and fuck the OP and the reposter.

Instead of DOING ABLEISM with “kindness in your heart,” maybe ACT with kindness (or rage?) to RIGHT the circumstances that have led MOST of us to the brink of falling apart—or over the fucking cliff…

The message directs us to MAINTAIN a self-oriented, noncommittal (SUPERIOR) mindset, and gives an OPTION to exercise kindness.

Rather than charge the audience to enact CHARITY (through HUMILITY and EMPATHY), the message REINFORCES STRUCTURAL INEQUALITY and forwards its superiority mindset.

6. Audience analysis.
The MESSAGE is ABLEIST, “WELLNESS” BULLSHIT.

The most obvious clue is the OP’s choice of perspective: you. “You” acts as a direct address. While the tone of the meme isn’t accusatory, it does SITUATE the audience—and thereby bake into its message ABLEIST ASSUMPTIONS.

Signaling agreement with the sentiment by reposting it with a one line comment and emoji (“PSA for the weekend 🥰”) DO NOT amount to SIGNIFICANT style choices commensurate to the sentiment presented in the meme—are NOT demonstrable signs of “kindness in your heart.”

OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANCE ALERT!! 🧵
Disclosure: I hate this kind of twee shit that’s rampant on FB, especially during the holidays—and not just because I’m a grumpy old fuck.

It’s lame, generic, sentimental POSTURING from GROWN ASS adults who should know better.

Round #2 of my ACUE grumbling and two gripes to pursue… 🧵

1. The classroom is not a factory and “productivity” is not the aim of education. PROGRESS is.

At first, “establishing a productive learning environment” seems like a harmless no-brainer. Of course the environment should be productive!

I read through this “Effective Practices Framework” and have two thoughts (well, more than two, but for rhetorical purposes…):
1. Repetitive.
2. No shit.

Let’s look at the first category. Bullets 1 and 3 are essentially the same thing, no? If a course has “learner-centered outcomes,” then…
