2/2: At an individual level, there is still such a thing as an honorable Republican.

Mike Pence and Liz Cheney, for example, deserve a co-monument on the National Mall.

But at the level of political and cultural movements, the American right is unitary, and irredeemably toxic.

4/4: So Golden is down by 5 points over the past year, while Democrats nationally have been improving their margins.

3/4: However, the electoral environment has shifted in favor of Democrats in 2025, so perhaps Harris’ margin of defeat last year is the wrong baseline for comparison.

Roughly, comparing this poll to the 2024 election, Maine’s 2nd District has gone from +1 Dem, to +4 Rep.

2/4: Golden is only 5 points behind the Republican, LePage, in a district that Harris lost by 9.5%.

To me, those numbers suggest that he’s an impressively competitive Democrat.
