Disappointing is understandable. An engineer who's excited about the passion they put into designing a car probably feels the same when the customer only cares about 'goes fast for the photoshoot'.
Does that mean having fun with a quick photoshoot and moving on to something else is wrong or bad?

Yea, pushing "you're not a real pony unless..." narratives can make newcomers anxious about upsetting the gatekeepers though. What if someone has gear, but doesn't have time or energy to do much more than a photoshoot or two a year? Show them the door? Not welcome? What's the criteria? Who decides?

2/? – while I totally understand the pushback against soulless like-farming, "you're not a real pony unless X or Y" catches a lot of legit ponies in the crossfire and encourages insecurity, and is literally gatekeeping. Phrasing is important but I get where you're coming from.

1/? - Strongly recommend holding the phrasing as "you don't need gear to be a pony" as opposed to "having gear doesn't make you a pony".
The former is supportive of newcomers, the later comes across as an exclusionary attack against 'posers'
