The banned words list originally came from this NYT article, where they had compiled terms that various federal government agencies had been told not to use.

I'm not normally a fan of court intrigue books, but this is a wonderful exception. The character building is wonderful, it has a bit of a mystery going on, and the court intrigue is mostly designed to show how a newly minted, young, ignorant half-breed goblin/elf matures into a great emperor.
