Jim Reeves' influence on Jamaican music, particularly in respect of gospel and devotional performers (Ken Parker covered several of his tunes), is far greater than many would expect

Lyrics actually written by Jah Frankie Jones, who lost out due to the vagaries of Jamaican copyright law

Ye sons of Great Britain I think no shame,
To write in praise of brave General Graham,
Whose name will be handed down to posterity without any stigma,
Because at the Battle of El-Teb he defeated Osman Digna.

...which ended up bankrupting Joe Gibbs.
Jamaica had not signed up to the Berne Convention on International Copyright and producers in JA had no concept of songwriter royalties, so when the writers came for their cut money there was none.
In Jamaican law copyright existed only in the recording.

"Never Diss Di Man" was another roots killer with a quite astounding sustained note

"Bruce Lee make you grab and flee". My copy of this is on a Japanese CD that includes the "Bionic Dread" LP. The translation of some of the Jamaican patois on the lyric sheet is often optimistic...

I think Chi Chi Run was earlier, but BY only appears on five tracks of twelve, so I would regard Screaming Target as his first actual LP

Despite the credit, I don't think Winston "Niney" Holness had anything to do with the songwriting

Back in 1979 when Lloyd's band was backing Dennis Brown and they were in Edinburgh I got a panic-stricken phone call. Lloyd's bass had packed in - could I source another at six hours' notice?

I did, but Ruddy Thomas managed a fix that lasted till the last show at the Rainbow...😒

Next question:
Who actually produced Lloyd Parks' "Slaving", and how did Glenmore Brown end up with a copy of the master tape?

"My Whole World" was not dissimilar to "How Long"
November 21, 2025 at 9:02 PM
"Dark End of the Street" was a Lee Perry production cut at Dynamic - DYNA - L.P. 207 -1
"How Long" was a Bunny Lee tune cut at Federal FBL 7831

My guess is that Scratch bought the rhythm from Lee's rather than the opposite

I think "Peyton Place" versioned this rather than "How Long". Both tended to focus on adulterous relationships

Obrey Wilson recorded much of his material in Nashville

Bob Tubert, whose credits include "Ozark Jubilee" and "A Tribute to Porter Wagoner" isn't the most plausible writer for a song recorded in the south very soon after segregation ended glorifying the vocalist's African ancestors
