The desert is away from the Nile, though a local crop is sugarcane, there is plenty of irrigated land and you'll see local donkey carts on the roads. The East side Temples are like right in the town, and are amazing in scale.

The temples are on both the East and the West side of the Nile. The West temples are out in the dessert hills, and the Valley is also. So you need a taxis or private tour car, or some tour bus, depends on how you arrange your trip.

This is a railroad strategy game, with combat. You use your trains to gather resources, run supplies to defensive positions, build expansions of your defenses. There are also combat rail units, so more like a single-player RTS, though the enemy uses vehicles not trains.

I think sausage is anti-wasteful, since the whole idea behind it is "be a shame if these bits and trimmings went to waste" It's all good, and if it isn't good then it goes into the hotdog machine.
