Like most viewers of the film, I was chilled by the way Nazism creeps into the action, a venomous snake hiding among the partying Berliners, hissing but not yet striking….until the fangs are fully bared and it does.

“Ageless”—to the extent that there is any meaning to the word at all—is a kind of shine that emanates from personality. Diane Keaton had that, even at 79, and so her having died is deeply strange, disorienting, intimately disturbing. I now know I’m mortal in some way that I didn’t know before.

Noah Wyle is a handsome man who has grown much more attractive as he’s aged. He’s also an antidote to the cruelty of those deciding for us whose life matters, who is worth saving, who is dispensable. You might say he’s an anti-Trump (who has, in contrast to Wyle, grown uglier the older he gets.)

Bizarre “press conference.” Musk uses his kid as accessory. Trump looks alternately worried, crazed, asleep.
Not a cute scene. Not even a dog would help.
And press in attendance so very polite, as usual. Remember how they badgered and harassed Hillary and Biden?

Thank you Marlene Talbott-Green! I was also thrilled yesterday to receive word that Sumter Coleman has honored me with a founding subscription. I’ll try to live up to their confidence in me!

That kid could be me my first semester in the SUNY doctoral program in philosophy. I almost quit because of Husserl. But feminist philosophy was just being born—big time—and I was lucky to be among that crazy, paradigm-busting cohort.

I reflect on “Black Doves,” “Love Actually,” “The Holiday” and a bit of “Die Hard” in my latest stack, on “Christmas” movies after a year in which love has NOT been all around. susanbordo.substack.com/p/keira-knig....

Sam (Ben Whishaw, looking both manly and feline) has a secret life. It’s his warm heart. It draws him to Michael (Omari Douglas), an artist whose sweetness blots out the “not nice things” that invade “triggerman” Sam when he closes his eyes.

Pundit’s autopsies are full of talk about “the economy,” the price of eggs, the “working-class” (Thanks, Bernie, for bringing that vague, outmoded phrase into continual circulation.) The words “kitchen table” has been said many times. But the fact that the Democratic candidate was a woman? Crickets.

In 2024, those of us old enough to have been grown-ups not just during 2016 but through Anita Hill (and, for some of us even further back, to when the problem “had no name”) are not just mourning Kamala Harris, but the silence around gender and race.
