I make friends in the forest and enjoy the little things. Catio deck repurposed. Professionally creative: that's not why I'm here. Encourager of exploration, enabler of chaos, wanderer, wonderer, chosen weapon: appreciation (genuine).
Uh oh, I got in trouble with Lily. I ran out of sunflower seeds! She came to the door and yelled at my face, went to each empty seed pile location and yelled at me again! She tried but didn't succeed to carry a walnut. I cracked a bunch for her. She was so happy she ate them all and took one home!

We're in perfect temperature weather now. There must be a lot more food available in the forest now. The squirrels haven't been visiting much, but when they do they're very happy. Brazen's in less hurry to collect nuts. He even stopped by just to excitedly collect and eat one and then leave.

I caught Brazen diving in the hammock, completely disappearing, then popping out gleefully with a stray sunflower seed to eat, and repeat. So I put more in there. Next day, he showed this secret treasure to Lily, who did the same thing. So much happy from her! Brazen scored extra points from her.

The deck buffet of nuts and seeds finally drew in the raccoons. I allow them night shift cleanup, but sometimes I catch them in the day. This time he was just too funny to shoo away, but the squirrels and birds had already eaten anyway.

Lily hasn't appeared for a few days now, but Brazen is still taking nuts home for her. He is not bothered by anything. He chases raccoons, knocks on the door, stands two legged like a gentleman, but if you're too slow picking a nut from the pile by the door, he'll come in and grab it himself.

Sunny is the most drama free squirrel is them all. Sunny doesn't rush or compete for peanuts. He will take one or two after the other squirrels chill out, but he's very content with - even prefers - the sunflower seeds the rest forget about when a peanut appears.

Brazen still lives up to his name. While cleaning all the seed and nut shells off the deck with a loud electric leaf blower, this little squirrel ran straight up to me, gestured and waited at the door for me to stop, go back in and hand him a nut.

This is Lily's chosen spot to eat, where she's protected from birds and can monitor everything. She whisper-grunts at Brazen as he collects nuts, raising her voice if he hesitates. She likes me to guard his for-pickup pile at the door and talk or sing to her while she eats.

Stellar Jays have big feet. No wonder they make such a noticeable thunkclack sound when they land on the deck. These Jays have a wide variety of calls when they're happy about peanuts! Screeches, song, clicks, and purrs!

Lily losing her baby belly, visits very briefly just 2x a day. Looking a little strung out. Brazen continues collecting nuts obsessively. Lily turns her whole body to watch him while she eats, like a judgemental supervisor. She stopped to bark at him and chase him, but he carried on collecting nuts.

Not spoiled at all... Scrabbles enjoying warm sun and a pile of seeds. Life of squirrel luxury!

Lily is busy with her new babies.

Brazen is collecting nuts with such obsession, he knocks on the door, and climbs the siding to the 2nd story window, to ask for more! I can call him over by name now!

The Steller Jays are back, but they haven't caught on yet that they're being gifted, rather than stealing nuts.

Just one caught on. That one landed/paused their flight and put the nut down. They waited until they were sure they had my attention, nodded at me, picked the nut back up and flew away.

Sometimes we get an unexpected guest. This one was announced by Brazen, who's been working extra hard to claim deck territory.

Lily had her babies. She's already slimming, & visiting less often.

Brazen is now collecting all nuts but walnuts, knocks on the door, and takes them from my fingers.

Brazen is so speedy, it took 4-5 handfuls of nuts to get clean shots of him collecting them. With the camera on Sport mode. He figured out how to pick up almonds, and now even the big pecans!

Lily squirrel is getting so big and adorable. Such a squorb! I wonder if her babies are kicking yet.

We've all been hard at work over here. Brazen got smart and started collecting nuts, not just seeds. He can barely fit the smallest nut in his mouth. Today he did something he's never done: be still for over two seconds. He took a whole nap on the deck, enjoying the finally warm sun.

You know the weather's getting better when the squirrels start lounging. They've been so frisky lately it sometimes sounds like tiny thunder on the deck, in the middle of a sunny day. Once in a while, they stop to stretch out and lounge for 10 seconds (probably an hour in squirrel time).

What do you call it when the squirrels get adorably borbular like the birds do when they borb? Squorb?

Lily, mama-to-be, is getting rounder by the day.

Also confirmed this is Lily: Crazin began visiting daily. He looks just like Lily did before squorbing, but is definitely a he.

Mama squirrel and mama-to-be squirrel, getting along for the first time ever, becoming friends.
April 11, 2025 at 6:12 AM
Brazen also stopped by today, looking a little frazzled. He didn't like the attention of the camera today so he didn't stay long.

This is what a squirrel looks like when they pout. Chonkers, the only lady gray squirrel, just got chased away from all the seed piles by Lily.

Last week, Lily squirrel was investigating every nook on the deck, and later seen carrying nest supplies. Today she appears to be growing a belly, and fast. I think she's going to be a mama.

This is a first: Lily and one of the gray squirrels eating in view of each other and in peace. Normally the Douglas squirrels, especially Lily, chase the grays off the deck.
April 6, 2025 at 5:31 PM
Lily is here! She has become very comfortable with the deck now. She is the most vigilant squirrel, but she didn't mind me talking to her from a small opening in the door.

The weather's getting so nice, everyone's eating less, but Dove the junco shows that borb season is not over yet. After feeding our forest friends for months, it's noticeable that they're not just bigger, but generally friendlier with each other, and far stronger too.
