And I kinda like to think that Cain and Abel are one, two parts of a person. Cain is the body, Abel is the soul. The soul itself is the Temple Not Made by Hands, intended to be a dwelling place for the Spirit of God.

To some extent, Cain’s fratricidal (or even suicidal) sin has been forgiven; he is still under the protection of God: “The Lord made a sign for Cain so that no one who met him would kill him.” This is the Seal of Mercy.

And maybe Abel did not receive the love of his parents, but he received the love of God the Father, for Abel is Jesus, and is the Lamb slain from the creation of the world, and from the creation of the world all sins have been forgiven.

So Cain gave his brother to the slaughter, just as Abel brought to the Lord the firstlings of his flock and their fat. For Cain, Abel’s life was equal to the life of a sheep, and Cain himself, for Adam and Eve, was the chosen one, a child “of the Lord".
