This isn't ideal at all, but what you could do is select the whole mesh with the triangulate modifier off and then "mark seam" for UV unwrapping. When you turn the modifier back on, the generated edges aren't seams so they'll display as a different color in edit mode. Really not terribly useful...

The only method I'm aware of is to add a triangulate modifier to the mesh and also turn on the wireframe option for the viewport overlays.
