I think folly feeding off of despair is a metaphor for her coping mechanism perpetuating the cycle of abuse and I accidentally wrote an essay about it #regretevator
Folly and Desire and Satiation Folly's character is enigmatic in its place within the regretevator cast, especially upon her first arrival back in 2024, which I still believe to be the true 'turning point' in the writing scene of the game, shifting focus onto refining character dynamics and lore within the game itself, instead of being outsourced or on a fanwiki somewhere on the internet. With her addition to the game came an antagonist role to the already diverse cast, and real stakes seen with her trailer, literally murdering a presumed new arrival, and her floor, being the first proper 'boss fight' stage in the game. And I could go into raptures about how much her presence benefits the overall narrative, but I'd like to take a closer look at her individual character, particularly the essence of desire within her story-- her need to 'feed' off of despair. On a surface level, this can easily be dismissed as another, for lack of better word, 'edgy' character attribute lousily attached onto her for more shock value, or in this case, I suppose, ironic shock value, since that the writers themselves seem to poke fun at the idea, but I digress, folly's hunger serves a role in exposition as well, by delving deep into characters' traumas that would otherwise not be unearthed, and in doing so giving a bit of insight into their thought processes, as well as hers. Before the release of the cleave, I recall reading through her dialogue and getting so bored of the repetitive nature of all her interactions. All she seemed to do was instigate, and although she could get defensive of certain things, it just felt shallow, since she was still so untouchable, so above all these insolent mortals that even dare to stand up to her looming presence. You really grow to resent her, and her total and absolute power over the other characters, at least in my experience. I felt this was intentional, and applauded the writing team for creating a character I could manage to hate so fervently. The context given from the cleave was so feasible and seminal it felt as if all my collective disdain towards her had been sharpened into a blade and used to slice me up into little pieces. In my empathising with her victims I forgot to humanize her own oppression, and it also gave me another realisation, that her malicious nature isn't just an attention grabbing attribute or a way to exposition-dump the casts' mental baggage in the most socially unreasonable way, it was also, proclaimed by her, her 'means to walk the mortal plane'. It was her escape. Her behaviour was not just irrational, it was realistic, some kind of abstract depiction of the human condition because the matter of fact is that folly herself cannot control the pain inflicted upon her by the great one, who towers over all and splits the sky with its branches, but she could control others' pain. She could control exactly how she would inflict the most devastating pain onto others, and it would in her mind mirror a fraction of the torment she had to go through, and it would soothe her in some strange way. And this payoff is instead described as her feasting, and her ability to roam. In hurting others, she does in fact gain a benefit, the ability to leave the limbo. Her path to freedom. I believe that is meant to symbolize that twisted natural satisfaction, or rather I could say, satiation, that comes with perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Of course, it doesn't validate her behaviour, but it definitely gives a valid explanation, which I believe is sufficient, and profoundly realistic. Surprisingly, profoundly, realistic, for such a wacky and nonsensical game. Folly regretevator taught me to understand and not forgive. unrelated picture of my folly plush
