And what do they do when I set up the message (in both English and Chinese)? Jump to ANOTHER vpn and resume their crawl from there. OK, second vpn blocked. Sorry but I have a "tail -f" running on my logs and I'm watching! (have I become an evil sysadmin?....)

(3) it's rude to write a crawler script for a site without at least looking around and seeing if there IS in fact a link to a bulk download first. And it's rude to lie in the browser string and play frequency-hop with IP addresses. And dangerous in Asia to request specific words that may be illegal😞

Obviously I blocked the entire IP space of the VPN they were using and set it to redirect to a message saying to email me explaining what you are trying to do. Honestly why do they write a custom script to attempt to stealthily hammer my home server when the entire thing's available as one download?

For 3 decades I've been saying "use Linux instead of Windows" and it looks like I'm going to keep on saying it. (Back up all your files before attempting to move your computer to Linux. I recommend a long-term supported version of Linux like @lubuntu.bsky.social Lubuntu 24.04 if you're new to it.)

for managers like that I tend to end up giving them the higher number only, and if I finish more quickly than that, good, I can clean things up a bit, refactor part of the code, whatever needs doing but management never allows time for....

Father must have been ginger. Coat colour gene is on the X chromosome. Male kittens get just one, so this would be black or ginger 50/50. if Pacemaker'd been female she'd have both genes which would make her tortoiseshell (calico).

but I think it's a superpower and my autistic friends are great fun. You can probably tell if someone's being positive or negative with the word by what context they put it in.

I keep thinking it would be good if we all run one of those "lend your computer to cancer research scientists etc" programs in the free hour, but I've not yet found one that gets a whole work unit done in an hour😢

I've also seen Claude & OpenAI's crawlers ingesting my Web server and wondered how long it'll take before it's in their training data. Funnily enough people sometimes say I write like GPT (although I do not use LLMs to write: all my writing is my own unless stated) maybe people like me trained it..

hey I got a Python script that lets me write or forward an email to myself with a date in the subject line (full date or just month or weekday) & won't put the message in my inbox until then. Might this be useful? It's open source but it's Python 2: I keep meaning to port it to something more modern

I don't think this is legally correct as I've been unable to verify from government sources that these are the laws still in force and relevant. There are lots of fake legal arguments for not paying taxes out there and most are made up so I'd be cautious
