🌟 We were proud to participate in PILnet’s Global Forum 2025 in Rome last week, convening a session on the role of lawyers as “enablers” or “ethical gatekeepers” in relation to #corruption and #kleptocracy, and highlighting the public interest that is the lodestar of professional ethics.

💥 Great to see @philbrickellmp.bsky.social flag the need for the Ministerial Code & Independent Adviser to be on a statutory footing. The Public Office (Accountability) Bill – or #HillsboroughBill – is a crucial opportunity for the govt to finally act on this key recommendation from ethics experts.

👏 Brilliant to see Crossbench Peer Lord Cromwell set out the case in today's debate on the Crime and Policing Bill for securing desperately needed funding for the fight against #EconomicCrime by reinvesting seized assets and fines back into enforcement agencies.

👍 After #OFSI’s early struggle to keep up with the rapid rollout of sanctions following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it’s clear that #OFSI is now starting to find its feet as a more credible & proactive enforcer of sanctions. But much more needs to be done to deliver results:

👩🏽‍⚖️ The judge found this was not just “sloppy” but “showed complete disregard for his professional obligations”. It’s a classic case of wilful blindness by a professional who deliberately fails to ask key questions of their client because they don’t want to know the answers.

📺 Fantastic to see @spotlightcorruption.org’s research included in the brilliant ITV documentary ‘The Covid Contracts: Follow the Money’, which was screened on Sunday night. Here’s @suehawley.bsky.social explaining how much of the PPE sourced from the VIP Lane turned out to be unusable.

👇 Alarming report from @josiah.writes.news on the lack of transparency about the government’s Defending Democracy Taskforce and declining staff levels. Last week in parliament we called for the DDT to report regularly to parliament on foreign interference in our democratic processes.

👏 Really welcome to see new lobbying registrar Claire Bassett talk about 'levelling the playing field' when it comes to lobbying.
💪 She also told the @houseofcommons.parliament.uk PACAC Committee that she is not afraid to challenge the government or to be unpopular.

When it comes to enforcement, Sue had two key recommendations for the committee: better resourcing for the Electoral Commission and a specialist police unit to support them in enforcing the rules. 5/5
September 9, 2025 at 2:48 PM
She also noted that, remarkably, it isn’t currently illegal to accept donations made from the proceeds of crime. 4/5
September 9, 2025 at 2:48 PM
Speaking alongside investigative journalist @petergeoghegan.bsky.social, Sue listed a number of examples of attempted foreign interference via political donations around the world. 3/5
September 9, 2025 at 2:48 PM
As well as looking at crypto donations, Sue welcomed the government’s commitment in its recent Elections Strategy to introduce new ‘know your donor’ rules. But she added that those rules would be useless unless they were enforced. 2/5
September 9, 2025 at 2:48 PM
🔥 Could dodgy crypto political donations undermine our democracy? That was the question our executive director @suehawley.bsky.social set out to answer at yesterday’s session of Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy. 1/5

Helen commented that, while the changes to the MLRs may be minor, the real test will be whether HM Treasury can now follow through with bold #AML supervisory reforms to improve how the legal sector is policed for complying with these rules.

⚠️ Sue warned that the fallout from the overturned probes could have a chilling effect on future cases, which would risk giving a green light to serious corporate misconduct with hugely damaging implications for consumers and the public as a whole.
