Ironically their first RPG to sell over a million copies was the first SaGa on the Game Boy

Probably not gonna be anytime soon if Todd's words are any indication

Ah well. Been hankering to replay Morrowind anyway. And maybe Kenshi

Launched in 2011 and still going strong.

Definitely a legendary cover for all the wrong reasons.

Unfortunately while the game got pretty good reviews, it was a sales flop, which closed the door on further Mega Man games being remade in that style.

Still, very fun game that I recommend checking out if you have a PSP (or the means to emulate one).

But we'll talk more about that game tomorrow. In the meantime, Mega Man 1 is available on many formats as part of the Mega Man Legacy Collection, and there was even a remake on the PSP called Mega Man Powered Up that added a lot of new content and had a sillier tone to go with its chibi art style.

It then of course went on to spawn a whole series of sequels, spinoff franchises, minigames and countless cameos in other games, with Mega Man or one of his descendants appearing in well over 100 games before all was said and done. Hell the NES/Famicom had six more on its own.

They allowed the team to continue work on Mega Man 2, but only on the condition that they work on it in their own time. So they spent about four months working 16+ hour days to make Mega Man 2 a reality. It of course went on to become one of the NES's most highly rated and beloved games.

It's a bit odd to think the series almost never became a franchise too; the first game got pretty middling reviews overall and wasn't a strong seller, so Capcom just about gave up on it as an IP. It was only because the dev team saw potential and insisted on making a sequel that it persisted.

Mega Man 1 is definitely one of the hardest games in the series, but it's honestly not too bad once you get used to its quirks. It definitely feels primitive compared to later games in the series too; especially its sequel, which is still regarded as one of the best sequels of all time.

Of course I'd you're not in the mood for his crap you can also just exploit the pause glitch and turn phase 2 into a mockery. Either way, you win. Fight, Mega Man! For everlasting peace!
November 11, 2025 at 8:46 PM
The second phase is definitely trickier as his cannon fires out large orbs that spiral around and are generally very difficult to avoid. He also doesn't take extra damage from anything, but slower weapons like the Thunder Beam and Rolling Cutter can hit multiple times per shot.

Wily attacks in a flying machine with a turret on the front, launching shells into the air at an arc. The first stage is easy enough with Fire Storm, especially if you get in close to let the orbiting fireball land multiple hits per shot.
November 11, 2025 at 8:42 PM
And yes. Dying at any of them sends you all the way back.

Wily comes right after and you only get a weapon refill before facing him - no health! Thankfully you at least checkpoint right before him, so if you die you don't have to fight the Robot Master gauntlet again (unless it was your last life).
November 11, 2025 at 8:39 PM
Then there's the final gauntlet. You do at least get a Yashichi powerup to top off your health and weapons, but then you have to fight four robot masters back-to-back with no chance to heal in between. Or even afterwards.

Bomb Man, Fire Man, Ice Man and finally, Guts Man.
November 11, 2025 at 8:39 PM
There's also four blocks in the room to throw, which will instantly destroy them. So my favorite strat is to just shoot the first three with the Arm Cannon and then throw blocks at the last four.

Just don't miss because if you die the blocks will not respawn until you use a continue.
November 11, 2025 at 8:32 PM
The next level is actually really short but has a tricky fight. You get to fight seven of these circling bubble machines, and for each one you destroy the next one gets faster and more aggressive. Hyper Bomb does good damage but is difficult to hit with, especially when they get really fast.
November 11, 2025 at 8:31 PM
I usually find Fire Storm works best since he tends to jump when you fire, so you can catch him either with the fire shot or the revolving ball. Rolling Cutter is a little trickier but also effective.
November 11, 2025 at 8:28 PM
The boss is a surprise as it's actually a holographic clone of Mega Man. He has the edge since he can deal contact damage but you can't. He also swaps to whatever weapon you're currently using so you probably want something that's easy to hit with but also not too tough to dodge.
November 11, 2025 at 8:28 PM
The next stage is a fairly standard one, save for having rematches with two bosses - Cut Man and Elec Man.

Yeah this predates the tradition of having to rematch all the robot masters again from a room full of teleporters.

There's no blocks in Cut Man's room this time but Fire Storm works well.
