Not to be mean, but Cate Blanchett isn't the kind of celebrity who feeds fan delusions or does shallow fan service. She has an audience, uses it to inspire, and is one of our most respected actors. Reducing her work to personal fan satisfaction undermines her brilliance.

However, what unsettles me is that some viewers—likely parts of Disclaimer’s male audience and even some women—seem to expect or even want that clichéd, simplified depiction of a rape survivor.

Cate Blanchett’s characters may not always fit neatly into likable categories, but that’s not the point; she brings realism, portraying dynamics that audiences might not be used to and might even resist acknowledging.
