There's something so chilling about Macross city at this point. APC's and Valkyries stationed throughout the streets, propaganda lies spread over the radio that downplay the losses of recent battles, and the city, the people adhere to this culture, this city they've built from ashes.

Another critical piece of why Macross works is that Roy Focker and Hikaru's dynamic is just as sincere as the love story.

My thesis to Hikaru's character is that Episode 4 is a centralizing, emotionally disruptive incident. It's not an excuse for how he acts throughout the series, for no character is 'excused' from their behaviour in Macross.
Yet it helps contextualize him in a way that explains his erratic behaviour.
