I found this photo I took some time ago of a “street library” in a leafy suburb of Melbourne.

In addition to providing free access to a nicely diverse collection of books for the public to borrow, they have kindly provided table and chairs to browse the books on site!

Note the stump step for kids.
Photo of a “street library” in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. A new black colorbond steel fence built upon a stone wall has been fitted with a homemade 3 tiered bookshelf in front of it. The bookshelf has been given a makeshift corrugated iron roof and protected from the weather by an old glazed window with 9 panels of glass that exactly match the shelves behind. The remaining structure is clad with treated pine fence palings. There is a small nature strip in front and below the bookshelf and a small round steel table and chairs have been carefully placed for passers by to sit and read. A sliced tree stump has been placed below the bookshelf to allow children to reach the books. The books have been carefully organised into colours of their spines which is aesthetically pleasing.

Close to civilisation yet if you forget where you are — seemingly far away.

Dense, uninhabited, undeveloped and difficult to access forest (except from the water).

Contains ancient Huon Pine trees that are hundreds of years old.

If the Thylacine has hung on to existence, perhaps it’s near here?

You am I: whilst not as cool to young live music lovers of today, in the 1990s, You Am I represented an Australian “can do” attitude and musical energy. Their albums Hi Fi Way & Hourly Daily (once mined for hits) were performed in full in Hobart last night to joyful fans & they delivered in spades.

A perfect Hobart day of moderate temperature, zero wind and calm beauty. Truly wonderful!
