Brückentag

The Millenium Bridge (nicknamed 'Blinking Eye') spans the River Tyne connecting Newcastle to Gateshead. It is capable of opening to allow ships to pass underneath (pics 1-3 closed / 4 open). This is achieved by using hydraulic rams which rotate the bridge (4.5 minutes to its full 40°)

(1-3) Central church of the Diocese of Durham. Romanesque Style

Has been used as film location (Harry Potter, Avengers Endgame, Snow Wite)

4) Marble pulpit (1874) / Coat of arms St Cuthbert / Tomb of Bishop Hatfield (+1381), one of the last warrior-bishops in England

Durham City

1/2) Riverbanks Walk. Stretching about 3km, the path follows the river Wear through wooded areas, beneath the towering cathedral and castle

4) Framwell Gate Bridge (1400), the primary entrance to Durham City Centre

Sandhaven / Littlehaven, Northumberland

1) Sandhaven Beach. A long sandy beach lined with sand dunes
2) The inevitable seagulls

4) "Conversation Piece" (Juan Muñoz, 1999) - 22 bronze figures positioned around an open space in the dunes (Littlehaven)

Edinburgh Castle

Perched on Castle Rock (a volcanic plug). One of the oldest fortified places in Europe. Built 11th Century through to the 21st century, home to kings and queens for many centuries.

1) The Scott Monument (1846). Built in honour of the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott
2) The Ross Fountain (1872). Made from cast iron, sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann

Ich weiß noch, was ich gestern beim Spaziergang in Edinburgh gedacht habe: braucht eine einzige Straße (1 schottische Meile= 1,8142 km lang) 72 Gift-Shops? Habe ich beim Zählen gedacht.

Vormittag mit Geschichte.

Alt: The Roman fort of Arbeia at South Shields. Although not actually on the line of Hadrian's Wall, was an essential part of the frontier system. Controlled the port on the riverside through which passed most of the traffic between Hadrian's Wall and areas to the south.
