Ahhh, gotcha. CRTs do beautiful things. Based on what you’ve said then I would bet it’s part of the sprite’s animation. Pretty neat and thoughtful art choice.

I was playing Valis a little while ago and noticed a similar action/blur effect. I’ve been wondering if those are frames built into the animation or if it’s a trick that the Genesis was capable of producing. Either way, I love it.

The palette and style remind me of Everdeep Aurora and I love that.

The closest thing coming to mind for me is Enter the Gungeon, which is really just a bullet hell twin-stick shooter. One of my all time favorites tho.
