I'm pretty sure I beat him before the nerf on my first playthrough, because even when I did it was after an entire evening of attempts. I'm finally doing another playthrough so I can see the NG+ stuff and he just fell over on my first attempt

I don't remember thinking "ah fuck this" very often when I read them tbh, like I was invested as a kid buy I never found them to be overly gruesome. Most of it was more cool than anything
