When I became a parent and learned that we have to enter it ourselves (and it is ... not the easiest system) I was shocked. I naively assumed that it was just uploaded (automatically, even?) from the doctor or health authority who gave the shot.

Interesting though, because my husband and I (both raised in ON, but in different school boards) both recall being taught with phonics.

K to grade 2 learning to read is primarily taught through phonics. They apparently will use three-cueing in specific cases if they think a kid will benefit because other methods aren't working, but this is done by teachers who know how to apply it.

So I saw this and also immediately went down the rabbit hole. My understanding (from talking to a few friends who are educators in Ontario) is that three-cueing was used in curriculum here (unclear when exactly it started/stopped), but is not currently being used.

Yeah both my husband and I (both raised in ON, but distant school boards) have memories of phonics, I don't remember ever being taught contextual cues for words ... but again, my parents were also big readers and read a lot to their kids.

I'm still in touch with my gr.4 teacher, tempted to ask!

I thought us Canadians were immune from it, but I saw this and looked it up and yeah, you're right ... I don't understand though, I attended two different schools as a child and neither of them used this. Did it vary by school board or province or something?
