Yes. Ironically the MMT many on the left once supported tells us just this. We need taxes not to raise money but to control inflation. To do this, we need to cut spending rather than saving - which means taxes on the middlingly well-off.

Indeed, the entire point of that Blairite compromise was to be as vague as possible.

What a huge sum. Will make all the difference, no doubt.

Gini worsened in the early years of Thatcher:1980-1983/4
It has hardly flickered for 40 years

So you select one smaller country, and not say Germany, and give me a flat falsehood about the UKs gini coefficient.
I see.

The UK's gini coefficient has hardly moved since 1985: 40 years ago. And you'll notice that most other European economies have flatlining economies too, sometimes worse, for precisely the same reasons.

The UK has the same kind of % of unpaid tax as other comparable jurisdicitons. There is no free lunch here in the way you supposed.

Taxes on average earnings are going up because that is the only way of raising the money required.
The idea that this Labour government is lazily not chasing unpaid tax, and that is the problem, is a view that is embarrassing to hold.

Yes, really. The percentage of unpaid tax in the UK is hardly different from anywhere else and hasn''t shifted over time.
The idea that, say, Gordon Brown just left unpaid tax alone is bollocks.
This is the way of things with a large economy.

What total and utter bollocks.
The idea that the government could, if it chose, just pick up that unpaid tax is childish.
I refer you back to my original post.

The idea that there is lots of money lying about to be taxed from "dodgers" is the politics of the 6th form.
There is not.
So yes, I do disagree. It is ignorant rubbish , pretending there are no hard choices to be made.
