You can even see that in anarchist movements. Makhno very reluctantly agreed to lead the black army when he realized scattered militias wouldn't cut it, and the CNT reluctantly joined into a war time government when people were looking for leadership

I think the core disagreement is all about what it takes to defend a revolution from reaction inside and out. I don't think Lenin was thrilled to strengthen the state so much based on his pre-revolution writings but it was such a central issue he didn't see a way around it 1/2

One of the high points of Spanish anarchism was providing free schooling when the state or church wouldn't. School is a historically progressive alternative to children working in factories or fields, and the idea of completely scrapping even a flawed school system is insane.
