What's also telling is both of Trump's victories came in years where the Dems effectively had no primary. Everyone cleared the aisle for Hillary--Bernie was a very ineffective campaigner--and Biden made the selfish and insane decision to run again before giving the nod to Kamala. Voters got no say.

This isn't to say it doesn't matter who you run, it obviously does, but the fact that 2024 tallied as a generic Republican victory (I remain unconvinced that different courses of action WRT Gaza, queer and trans rights, Project 2025, etc could have changed the outcome) is pretty telling.

Dems need a complete changing of the guard and a full primary every 4 years regardless of who's in office, but the simple truth is if swing voters-plus have been able to ignore Trumpism within the GOP for a decade, the only way to win is "be the party out of power when bad money things happen."
