As they say: if #climate change is the shark, then #water is its teeth. This is especially true in Southeast #Asia which is starting to see increasing water stress due to both human factors (e.g. loss, waste, and inefficiency) as well as the changing climate.

Working with @ricliv.bsky.social, Prof. Hawkins has now updated the stripes to convey an even richer set of data: global average temperatures from the surface up to the troposphere and stratosphere, and also in the ocean from the top 100m down to depths below 1,500m.

@edhawkins.org first published his now famous #climate stripes in 2018. These were based on annual global average temperatures on the surface of the Earth starting from 1850, and were an electrifying example of the power of data visualization, conveying compellingly the underlying #warming trend.

As a warming planet drives growth in air conditioning, above all in #Asia Pacific, this has contributed to rising #emissions from increased electricity consumption on fossil fuel-dependent grids.

The energy transition remains uncertain. The @iea.org predicted in June 2024 that global oil demand will peak in 2029 at 105.6M barrels per day before declining due to increased EV penetration, greater efficiency, and a shift in power generation from oil to renewables.
