There are recorded comments from both Van Zant and producer Al Kooper saying that the band was anti-Wallace and segregation, and a lot of people misunderstood this because they didn’t catch the “boo, boo, boo” line.

Yes, they very clearly were arguing that Young - who they were big fans of - shouldn’t stereotype all southerners as Klan supporters.

That’s what the reference to Birmingham and the Watergate line is pointing out.

Sweet Home Alabama is explicitly an anti-Wallace song (“boo, boo, boo.”), those guys were liberal hippies. Saturday Night Special is pro gun control.

The game has changed, friends. They're about to start ignoring judicial rulings. Democratic leaders need to wake up or transfer their positions and authority to those who understand how to operate in this extremely heretofore un-American type of political reality.
