The other members of the big band I play in (~27km from home) keep acting more and more incredulous each week that I bike to rehearsal, so now I have to keep riding there when it gets properly cold in a month or two

Cycling hot take: the disc vs rim brake debate is overblown. Maintenance on discs is a couple extra steps but it's not that onerous, and rim brakes have adequate stopping power for nearly all practical situations. Either one is completely fine for most riders.
