Every time I see an open call for an exhibition that says "any medium" I have the urge to test exactly how far you could push that...just keep turning up with increasingly unhinged artworks.

On the train to Sheffield. There's a bunch of teenagers heading out for a DofE expedition, they're looking out at the hills and calling the landscape "sick", which is apparently back in fashion as a compliment. This is very wholesome.

Because my partner has never seen it, we have decided to watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Pray for us. The whole trilogy is barely held together by the efforts of four queer men. I will also give points for DRAGON, and (some) dwarf singing. Everything else...well..

I do *try* not to be overly cynical about art things that people seem to enjoy, but you know all art experiences can be "immersive art experiences" if you just sit and look at the thing for a few minutes.

Fabulous folk session at the Pride of the Peaks, New Mills last night! There were actually lots more musicians than you can see in this photo, and really wonderful playing and singing. Will definitely be going again!

Planned a walking route yesterday that I hadn't realised took us through part of the route we used for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions with the school I used to work in. This place used to feel like it was out in the middle of nowhere and now I can walk there from home!
Two side by side photos of the same metal gate against a dry stone wall. The wall has a narrow gap with a step built into it, and the gate is on the other side of this as we are looking at it. In the first image, the wall is very mossy, and nettles are creeping up by the gap. The gate leans against the wall. There is a building in the distance, across a field, that has started to collapse - a large section has no roof. A hedge runs down the left hand side of the picture, from the wall and past the building. In the second image, the wall seems less mossy and the nettles have been cut back. The gate is now upright, and is attached with a chain to a metal post to the right. It also has a sign attached to it (no words are visible from this side). The hedge is much thicker now. The same building can be seen in the distance but the section that had no roof has now collapsed completely, and the roof of what remains is starting to fall apart.

First test print of a wood engraving of a singing wren on a tree stump. Above it is a sonogram of part of its song.
The scientist in me wants to put frequency and time labels on the axes but I think I should resist.
Do I give the wren a woodland background or make it a clean, solid black?
Print in black ink of a 140x70mm wood engraving of a wren in full song, perched on a decaying tree stump with fern moss and fungi. Above the head of the wren is a sonogram of part of its song. A sonogram is (oversimplifying) a plot of sound frequency against time. Ascending and descending sounds and rapid trills can be seen.

Went to see the Ballad of Wallis Island tonight. Absolutely loved it. I was almost worried about seeing it because I love the short film it's based on so much, but it managed to keep everything that was good about that film and expand on it in a way that never felt forced.

An intersex-inclusive pride flag, hanging from green balconet railings on a stone building. There is a green sign attached to the wall that says "art studio" with a hand pointing to the building. Two tables set up in a gallery with craft activities taking place. Adults and children are taking part. The front table is covered in various fabrics, ribbons, pipe cleaners and lots of other bits and pieces to make wooden spoon drag queen/king puppets. On the back table people are making friendship bracelets. There is art in lots of different styles and media on the walls around them. The same gallery space, this time a view from behind two people, who watch as others take part in craft activities. The person on the left has short, grey-brown hair and wears a brightly coloured T shirt with a kind of Cubist portrait design. The person on the right has grey bobbed hair and wears a dress with vertical rainbow stripes. A table full of different fabrics and craft materials. A wooden spoon puppet is being constructed, she has curly orange hair, a pink and blue dress, and a leopard print scarf or stole. You can see various people's hands busy at work around the table creating their own puppets.
