Ok. Great discussion. Let me end by asking you to please read JS Mill’s On Liberty, because he makes the case that open exchange of arguments and written claims is better for society in part because it inoculates the public to bad ideas.

You can read On Liberty by Mill if you want to know why

Actually, it’s really bad. If Nazis are on Twitter then they have to engage with pushback, and the public is inoculated to their views through exposure and refutation.

There’s an asymmetry between persuasion and boycotting. If this boycott bankrupts X, we lose a forum to speak in. If I convince you not to participate in a boycott, we still have the forum.
September 7, 2023 at 2:37 AM
Yeah it is. If a boycott bankrupts X, it’s going to be the same as if government shut it down. less speech. Less openness. But, if I convince you and others not to boycott it, there is no loss of speech and openness

Yeah, it may be protected by the constitution, but so is some forms of hate speech. Not everything that’s constitutionally protected is good. And suppressing speech is bad. Organizing boycotts of forums for speech is a kind of boycott that becomes a pernicious form of censorship

There are no hard lines between social phenomenon. Boycott? Censorship? If enough money is spent smearing and trying to sabotage forums where a certain group of people talk openly, enough of them go away that it’s as effective as if the FBI was stalking and beating them.
September 7, 2023 at 1:44 AM
Respectfully, Strossen (2018) argues that censorship is counter-productive, worsening hate over time.
September 7, 2023 at 1:41 AM
There’s no evidence or argument in boycotting. In the case of Twitter/X, the boycott is particularly pernicious because the aim is to punish or deter someone else from creating a forum that tolerates a particular group of people.

Name calling. Not an argument.
September 7, 2023 at 1:35 AM
Well you did a great service and I get that at some point you have to stop. I had to stop too (I was on Gab). That’s fine. Let someone else pick it up for awhile, or forever.
September 7, 2023 at 12:44 AM
Well it’s weird to log on and have 35 people disagreeing with you, and being weirdly snarky over simple disagreement. Is the idea that you’re trying to bully me into shutting up or do you gain followers from being snarky or like… what is going on inside your mind?

I just don’t think it’s meaningful speech. There’s no argument. No logic. No evidence. But if you know someone who has written a good book or essay or publication arguing in favor of your view, please do share the reference
September 7, 2023 at 12:05 AM
hey. I don’t really want to argue with you. You can help me if you want to persuade me to your view: what’s the best book or essay or publication in favor of your viewpoint? I’ll read it
September 7, 2023 at 12:04 AM
Nice talking to you too
September 7, 2023 at 12:00 AM
I don’t know what you mean with this second part
September 6, 2023 at 11:59 PM
I don’t care what SCOTUS says. Those are legal arguments that exist in a unique legal context.
September 6, 2023 at 11:58 PM
Nice name-calling.

ADL is just obviously bad
