The others followed them, yet I was rooted to the very stone beneath my feet. oft had we found ourselves in peril's grasp, yet always we emerged, bloodied perhaps but whole. Now... now the veil had thinned. Had it not been for some unknown force, we should have truly lost one of our own. As Vincent bore the weakened Callisto in his arms, my gaze lingered on their retreating forms, gripped in a silence too heavy to break. Disbelief settled itself upon my shoulders like a shroud. When at last I turned once more to face the doorway, my eyes fell upon the place where his broken form had lain. There, pooled upon the stone, was a slick of crimson, his lifeblood, staining the floor and casting its scarlet hue upon the very walls, creeping in every direction as a flower in bloom. It stared back at me, unblinking, an unyielding monument to the truth I... we, had not wished to see. The Callisto I had known, had been crushed before us, no spell nor wish could deny it. Now, in the arms of Vincent, lay a Callisto that was more of a mystery than I think any of us, even himself, had expected. 'Tis a curious thing, how swiftly one's view of the world is altered when death brushes close. In but a breath, the stakes of our journey were cast anew, no longer an ordeal of danger and glory, but one of true mortal cost. Mayhap Vincent has stared down such shadows many times before, but I dare say, for many of the young among us, this marked the first such reckoning.

a comic-like illustration of Callisto, a tiefling with skin like the night sky and long white hair and broken horns lies crushed against the wall, his eyes closed. he's dead, his ribs broken and protruding from his ribcage. blood and gore spills out from his body, his arm is broken and twisted. on the left side are two panels - in one of them his chest starting to mend itself, ribs snapping back into place while their skin binds itself back together, and in the next it's almost back to normal again, the last of the wounds closing rapidly. in the middle, there's a panel of a hand with some of the bones still showing as it stiches itself back together. next to the hand is a panel of their mouth opening, drawing breath even as blood floods from their lips. in the last panel, their eye is open again, and he's crying blood. a parchment page with a recap of the scene the art is from, written by Claus - shorted here due to the alt text character limit - reading: An excerpt from Gadot Fenstril's Children of Chult (Gadot first describes the horrible moments before they come to see the body, then:) Callisto. No rhyme nor rhythm could give voice to the hollow thunder in my chest. Then, against all reason, against the laws of mercy and nature, something stirred. A crack, bone grinding on bone, sharp and visceral. A realignment of the impossible. In the harrowed stillness, his form began to move, not of will, but of some unknown force. Bones twisted back into their housings, the ruin of his frame knitting itself together as if the wheel of time had spun in reverse. Torn flesh writhed, stretched, seeking its separated pair, binding itself anew. And we, his friends, his comrades, we watched in speechless terror and wonder, as the broken body of Callisto began, impossibly, to rebuild itself. As his form knit itself anew, all wounds closed, save for the horns, which remained unmended. He gasped, drawing breath through newly wrought lungs, and a great sigh of relief escaped us all in unison. Yet the terror in his eyes, the confusion writ plain upon his face, made it clear that he knew no more of what had passed than we did.
