Most commonly it is confined to the flanks but I have also seen it as hair loss on the ears/face.

This is not an itchy skin disease but hair loss + hyperpigmentation of the skin. Boxers are commonly affected but I have also seen it in breeds such as Pointers, Schnauzers, and mixes.

For dogs, it’s called Seasonal Flank Alopecia or Light Responsive Alopecia. I see it commonly in dogs in Cleveland, Ohio especially after a dark winter. It can present as hair loss and increased pigment in the flank area sometimes extending to the saddle area.

Dogs with atopy tend to lick their feet, rub their face, scoot their butt. Cats can do several things:
- miliary dermatitis (little crusts under the skin)
- bald bellies
- fat lip
- red plaques on their belly or hind legs.

Thankfully tumors are rare and remedies include adding more fiber to the diet, working the dog up for food allergy using a prescription hypoallergenic diet like Blue Buffalo HF or NP, an anti yeast oral medication, or infusing the anal glands with an anti inflammatory.
