Desire is what keeps you from “going too far.” Jouissance is what happens when you do.

This is what I’m thinking as I re-read the first two chapters of Lacan’s Seminar VII: The Ethics of Psychoanalysis:

The way Lacan uses the term “moral” is tied to what would be socially acceptable or endorsed. This is opposed to ethics which Lacan links to a singular & idiosyncratic desire.

From @craigmod.com’s Things Become Other things event at Bookends & Beginnings in Evanston yesterday, which was a very fun event.

Recently, I had a conversation with somebody who is interested in psychoanalysis and Lacan where I was asked if I could explain the destination between the drive and jouissance

Here is my attempt to describe how I think about that destination…

I’m a sucker for a good time travel story and right now, I’m reading “On theCalculation of Volume (Vil. 1), by Solvej Blake.

I’m half way through it, and I think not is one of the most interesting time travel stories I’ve encountered.

So it looks like Sam Altman & Jony Ive are going to team up to make something, but no one knows what.

My guess is it will be like TARS and CASE from the Christopher Nolan film Interstellar… but… with rounded edges?

For those who may be interested: I’ve started a podcast with my fellow Lacanian analyst Isolda Alvarez.

The description is relaxed but serious conversations about Lacanian psychoanalysis and the way it affects/ is affected by) the imaginary, symbolic, & real today.

I've seen a few people post about the Lacanian way of formulating psychosis, and wanted to chime in with my understanding/articulation of how psychosis functions and how it might be treated clinically.

When psychoanalysis is working, one of the effects can be the analysand experiencing a shift from being captured by an assumed and unexamined fantasy to recognizing the fantasy as a fiction that that does not need to be imposed or enacted as it has thus far.

I'm spending a lot of time thinking about how psychoanalysis can move a person from being the subject of the unconscious to being able to witness the structures that have determined subjective experience.

I used to think people with kids were over reacting when cold/flu season came around. I was like, “Why are you freaking out so much?”

Now, as a #parent of 4 #kids, when it’s cold/flu season, and one of my kids coughs, I’m like “Move the doomsday clock to one minute past midnight!”

Now, I’m pruning who I follow here…

Bluesky (and other forms of social media) are windows onto the world, but we can control the view they show us, eh?
February 9, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Over the past three days, I’ve managed to wrangle my email inbox(s) from hundreds of messages (83 new/unread) to eight emails (four new/unread).

A small victory, but one that I felt worth enough to brag about with a post on Bluesky.

My wife and I had our fourth child (first daughter) yesterday.

For me, these few days in the hospital exist as such a liminal space. I can sense the day-to-day rhythms and routines going outside of it, but I feel like I’m in a short reprieve from them.

I also experience time differently…

I wrote up and did a short QTS podcast regarding thoughts on minimalism in general and my reaction to the idea, "Anything taken to the extreme can be complicated. And simplicity is no exception."

I've got a project right at the finishing line. One more set of edits, and I think it will be good to go... It is tempting to try to push through this last round, but I've been going at it for so long that I know I need a break. Till tomorrow then.
