As a young woman, she traveled to Rome where she was introduced to Michelangelo, who immediately recognized her talent. And, since he was gay, he did not sexually harass her.

BORN ON THIS DAY in 1860, Grandma Moses (Anna Mary Robertson Moses) was an American folk artist who began painting in earnest at age 78.

She gained popularity after she was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1953.

BORN ON THIS DAY in 1967, Kalli Kalde is an Estonian painter and illustrator. She has been a member of the Tartu Artists' Association since 1995. She is 58 today. Happy birthday, Kalli!

BORN ON THIS DAY in 1889, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, a Japanese-American painter who immigrated to the U.S. at age 17. In 1948, he was the first living artist to have a retrospective at the Whitney. This is "Self-Portrait as a Photographer," which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
