Lousy bum who streams on Twitch

It's way more important that the streamer is having fun than playing by the rules. No one wants to watch miserable people (they don't already know), but a stranger just having a genuinely good time?

So yeah, just enjoy yourself ^^

In the Time Trial, Asura has the best Accessory in the game equipped, called Marlene's Ring.

It adds:
+ 20 Str, 25 Int, 05 Agi
+ 25 to all Classes
+ 25 to all Affinities

And as it's an Accessory, that's added to both attack and defence!

8/255 drop rate to get it yourself...

The story is great, the combat is deep and satisfying, the graphics and cinematography are outstanding. God I love this game! I can't recommend it, some people will absoutely hate their time with it, but I still want everyone to play it regardless!

The one word above all else I'd use to describe Vagrant Story is "Obtuse". The combat mechanics are kinda complicated and poorly explained, and you're likely to spend a heck of a lot of time menuing, switching weapons and gems. And yet...

It absolutely has the best cinematography on the PS1, and possibly of all time. I'd say there have been a few prettier games, stuff that's gone super stylistic, but for the PS1, nothing beats this game at all!

There are some good guides on GameFAQs if you wanted to check, specifically Beamup's Combat Mechanics Guide, or, uh, y'know, my guide and walkthrough (specifically the Tips and Tricks page at the beginning of the walkthrough section rather than the entire thing [though it's all good!]).

Sure, if you do grok the mechanics, the game is way easier, but it's just not explained very well, so it's not remotely unreasonable to struggle with Vagrant Story.

It's not a case of you being dumb and missing something, it's just that dang unclear how to actually build for boss fights!
January 10, 2025 at 3:41 PM
Probably by ridiculous levels of persistence in doing single digit damage to bosses, or using the Raging Ache chain ability to do larger numbers but also dying a whole bunch because of it! The game is so obtuse, this is how a lot of people beat it.
January 10, 2025 at 3:41 PM
It's an atypical one, but yeah, it's an RPG. It's fairly short, I'd expect a first playthrough to be maybe 20-25 hours long? And the combat system is very unusual, but it's also poorly explained, so new players often really struggle to do any damage in boss fights. But damn, the game is fantastic!

Some things are just weird though, like RISK increasing the success rate of Unlock and Analyse, as well as the efficacy of Heal. And what's the logic behind the blade combinations? Throwing Knife (Dagger) plus Clergy Rod (Staff) equals a Footman's Mace (Great Mace). Where's the material come from!?

Vagrant Story's mechanics are pretty holistic, everything that affects the enemy can affect you, and vice versa. One of the only exceptions is the ability to attack enemies when they are in midair, but being unable to be targetted when in midair yourself.

I think we were all saying it during December that you were gonna hit it with the number of lurkers from Snee's! Very happy you made it and that I now have a nice shiny Founders badge!

I'd add some in-game tutorialisation since it's kinda complex mechanically, and a lot of people bounced off it because of that. Put a weapon wheel as a separate shortcut menu like the spells / abilities, and it's pretty much good to go!

It's hard to say, I can only narrow it down to three:

> Chrono Trigger
> Streets of Rage 2
> Gunstar Heroes

Yeah, I'm old.

GameFAQs is definitely the place for Vagrant Storry guides. Beamup's Mechanics guide is a fantastic resource, JTilton has a few very helpful guides on there as well (he was pretty much the GOD of VS guides), and for a general walkthrough guide, well, I'll toot my own horn - mine's the way to go!

it's why, despite the fact it's my favourite of the series, Final Fantasy XII feels like a bit of a letdown. It just doesn't feel Matsuno-esque enough in the writing.

I like my angry medieval politics!

There's loads I haven't read, but of those I have, I'd probably put The Black House at the top, the sequel to The Talisman co-written with Peter Straub. I really liked the first one as well.

I also have a fondness for The Dark Half, which I think isn't particularly popular? Ah well...

And boy is that a slog itself, the lack of challenge meaning you kill everything in one shot, which only highlights how slow everything in this game is. Love the game, want everyone to play it, but that New Game+ mode is just plain not good. I'd only ever recommend people do it once and move on.
December 3, 2024 at 8:30 PM
I love Vagrant Story, I really do, but the NG+ mode is not good. It does have some cool stuff in it, but it also has a bunch of palette-swapped boss fights, a really hard to navigate dungeon, and you still have to get most of the way through the game again just to access most of the new stuff.
