Melissa is a Category 5 storm with sustained wind speeds of 180 mph (280 kph). It is expected to slice diagonally across the island, entering near St. Elizabeth parish in the south and exiting around St. Ann parish in the north, before heading for Cuba. A life-threatening storm surge of up to 13 feet (4 meters) is expected across southern Jamaica.

I’m wondering how strong the sustained winds are for Hurricane Melissa heading towards Jamaica
The researchers suggest that Category 5 be capped with sustained winds of 192 miles per hour and a Category 6 would be anything above 192 miles per hour. In the Atlantic Basin, where our hurricanes develop and impact us, there has never been a hurricane with winds above 192 miles per hour. The closest was hurricane Allen back in 1980, when at its strongest had sustained winds of 190 miles per hour.

A graph showing time vs. temperature for the world. Each year is a line on the graph and they form a bell shape because in January it is colder in July it is warmer and back to November it is cold again. It is clear to see from the graph that this year and last year are the hottest on record. Almost everywhere they stand at least 1 degree Celsius above the averages of the last couple decades.
