As I remember, in 1974 there was the issue of indicting Nixon for Watergate (no question as to his guilt) because he was still in office. Leon Jawarski, the Special Prosecutor, was reluctant citing the lack of precedent for indicting a sitting president. That decision then set the “precedent.”

Bad precedent.

When JFK was shot, we did not know what might follow. The facts had yet to come out, and it was feared that there would be instability to come. Johnson’s leadership was crucial. Thanks for posting this.

Yes, of course I’d like a follow back! And I welcome other like minded resisters.

The shooting. The rush to Parkland Hospital, the bloody roses, the pink suit, Walter Cronkite taking off his glasses to announce what we already knew to be true. The swearing in of LBJ on the plane, the lowering of the casket from the plane, Jackie and Bobby attending, the enormous grief. All of it

As I remember, JFK refused to be further involved in Viet Nam. Johnson escalated. If Kennedy had remained President, then Bobby (Sr.!), who was anti- corruption and pro civil rights, would still have been Atty Gen. History was changed that day, and we are much the worse for it.

This year, coincidentally, Nov 22 is also on a Friday. I remember that John John’s birthday was Nov 25, just a few days later. That famous salute. The grief of the nation, and the hollow Thanksgiving of 1963. The depth of that loss is unfathomable.

Leonard Bernstein’s Finale to Candide: “Make our garden grow” in the original with Barbara Cook and Robert Rounseville. So much “philosophy” in that show boiled down to the simplest life lesson in one of the finest musical settings. But then, Bernstein always did it right.

@TheLastWord has been so strong on this nomination, getting a lot of information public. Thank you, Lawrence!

Yes. And with good reason. But I don’t remember them directly attacking other on air anchors. I don’t watch much, so I could have missed it if they did.

I didn’t see it on Lawrence either. Perhaps it is network protocol not to disparage one’s colleagues.

So glad to see you here, Jamie. I was hoping to connect with some fellow opera folks. Context: I’m a veteran of the old Met standee line who no longer lives in NY. But I’m still opera strong. 🎵
