Michael Hage looking absolutely Nick Suzuki-ish here, with a great mix of high hockey IQ, skill and timing.
Michael Hage ends the scare for Canada in OT. After Latvia’s late equalizer, Canada finally gets a clean look, Hage finds soft ice and snaps it home for the 2-1 OT win. 🇨🇦 #WorldJuniors

Canada has gone to OVERTIME a total of 5 times in the last four World Juniors. If you blindly bet $10 on the regulation draw in every Team Canada game in that stretch, you’d be up +$420.20 despite losing 81% of bets.

Rudolfs Berzkalns battles to a loose puck, kicks it off his own stick and in, and Latvia ties it 1–1 with under two minutes left. Nightmare moment for Canada. All effort, all belief, for Latvia. 🇱🇻 #WorldJuniors

Through 36 games, the Leafs show poor late-game control, frequent multi-goal losses, and no stable identity. They struggle at home, fail as favourites or underdogs, can’t impose structure, and the betting market has nearly written off their playoff chances.

Our guy Frankie Corrado calling the Klaucans illegal check to the head on Zayne Parekh “one of the worst calls ever.” Wild. I didn’t know Frankie was Latvian.

After 40 minutes, Canada leads Latvia 1-0 in a grind. Scoreless first, tight 5v5, then discipline cracks it open. Klaucans takes a 5+10 for an illegal head check and Cole Reschny converts on the power play.

Going to be a tight third period.

Cole Reschny buries the power-play goal. One mistake, instant leverage for Canada. 1-0.

The Leafs changed assistant coaches instead of their identity, and the market responded by keeping them volatile, mispriced, and difficult to trust night to night.

Here's Why Firing Marc Savard Won’t Fix the Leafs

Border friction, political unease, new entry rules and rising costs kept Canadians home. The half-empty arena at Canada’s World Junior opener in Minnesota reveals how border policy and perception now shape hockey crowds more than rivalries or schedules.

Canada’s 7–5 opener looked reassuring, but recent World Juniors show a clear pattern: beating Czechia once rarely settles anything, and rematches rarely end well.

Canada Beat Czechia Once, History Says That’s Not Enough

If you’re Team Canada at the World Juniors, the nightmare scenario is not playing a good Team USA. It’s playing the same opponent twice, especially when that opponent is Czechia.

Canada has not beaten Czechia twice in the same World Juniors since the 2022 mid-summer tournament.

Porter Martone seals it with the empty-netter 🏒🔥

7–5 #TeamCanada 🇨🇦

That finally gives Canada a two-goal win over Czechia, something they hadn’t managed at the World Juniors since 2022.

Tomas Galvas drags Czechia right back into it 🇨🇿🔥

Defenseman jumps the rush, gets the feed, and buries it. Assists to Vaclav Nestrasil and Vojtech Cihar.

CAN 6 – CZE 5

The Czechs haven’t lost to Canada by 2+ at World Juniors since Aug. 19, 2022.
December 27, 2025 at 4:05 AM
Michael Hage keeps piling it up. Second assist of the night on Ethan MacKenzie’s goal gives him 3 points, and Canada finally gets some separation.

6–4 Canada.

First 2-goal lead at the World Juniors since Dec. 29 last year vs Germany.

Absolute chaos at 3M Arena 🤠🔥

Tij Iginla answers immediately with a snipe from the high slot. No breathing room in this one.

5–4 Canada 🇨🇦

The Czechs are live again 🇨🇿🔥

Tomas Poletin buries one after a monster shift from Tomas Galvas.

Tie game. Again. 4–4.

Parekh snipes his second of the night on the power play at 3:49, ripping it top far corner off a feed from McKenna and Reschny to give Canada a 4–3 lead. Canada’s offensive QB is cooking from the point right now. #WorldJuniors #TeamCanada #WJHC26

Zayne Parekh knots it 3–3 for Canada at 17:02 of the 2nd period. If this one gets to OT, note that Canada has gone to extras just 3 times in the last 3 WJCs, each coming at odds of 5–1 or longer. #WorldJuniors
December 27, 2025 at 3:10 AM
Petr Sikora puts Czechia up 3–2 at 12:13 of the 2nd period. Canada currently holds a 3–2 record in its last five WJHC games, all three losses as favourites against massive betting underdogs. #WorldJuniors
December 27, 2025 at 3:02 AM
Vojtěch Čihař deflects one home on a delayed penalty to tie it 2–2 vs. Canada in Czechia’s 2026 #WorldJuniors opener.

Czechia’s now 12–9 in regulation over their last 21 WJC games, with two massive upset wins over Canada in the past two years. 🇨🇿🔥

The Leafs lost 2–1 to Montreal on Saturday night. With that, 6 of Toronto’s 8 home losses this season have been decided by a single goal.
