I like watching the movie first. If you read the book first, you are typically going to be dissapointed in the movie in some way because book is usually better. If you watch the movie first, reading the book is like getting extra information on the characters and you end up enjoying both more.

I don't think Duolingo will help. I have used it with Portuguese and it was not great. I think it more for absolute beginners. For somebody in your position, a month in Spain - in a non tourist area would be the ticket. All the best
