Um, are you sure about that? A main marketing point for the 486 was the on-chip FPU and no longer off-chip. Image below is from p18 of 486 data sheet. I worked on the Fairchild Clipper and we had an on-chip FPU in 1986, so the 486 was serious stuff for us.
