Parents see the cracks widening, and many are speaking out in support of teachers.

Fast forward to today: chronic underfunding, larger class sizes, rising student needs, and dwindling supports have taken a heavy toll. Teachers are stretched thin, and a new generation is being handed a system in crisis.

Teachers were respected, students excelled, and classrooms reflected a balance of rigour, creativity, and support that was the envy of many jurisdictions. There were challenges, but teachers held the system together.

In the early 2000s, Alberta was considered the best public education system in the English-speaking world. A model others studied, praised, and tried to replicate.

Why? Because even with retirement not far off, they care about the future of students and are deeply worried about the system our young teachers are inheriting.

The system itself is far more broken and in desperate need of repair. I spoke to a veteran teacher who was a young teacher back then, and even though they are now the sole income in their household, they still voted “yes.”

This time feels very different. Teachers are standing together with greater strength, and parent support seems stronger too, even among families with young children or kids graduating this year.

I was also on the front lines of the lockout and the Mediated Settlement in the early 2000s. Back then, teacher resolve was not as strong—far less than 89.5%—and parents were more divided in their support of teachers.
