Text from my writing app reading: Mihawk stared into the depths of his current experiment. He had microscopes and spectrometers of course. That would come later. The first step was observation. There was something to be said about staring into the infinity of something, equipped with nothing but his naked eyes. Acid ate away at bone with a swirling fractal determination. He could feel the math of it flowing like water in the back of his mind, like a single violin plucked out of it's home orchestra. Behind him, the door opened. Mihawk paid it no mind. People were not interesting enough to merit looking away from the burning meat rank smell of his experiment. Two sets of foot steps. The bow legged shuffling gait he recognized as belonging to Gecko Moria who'd been up earlier for reasons Mihawk couldn't be bothered to remember. The other gait was slightly uneven, though the rolling hitch was hidden well. It felt in his mind like the man had to keep reminding himself not to reach- an injury? The new man was a red head, ocean blue green eyes, naturally perfectly bronze in a way celebrities spent small fortunes trying to replicate. He had three slashing scars over his left eye and had more recently lost his left arm above the elbow. Statistically unlikely for one man to carry two such severe injuries from two different events, yet the truth was written on his body. The scars over his eye were much older than his still healing arm. His body hadn't adjusted to that loss yet, still always reaching. Such severe injuries spoke of a life of action and violence. Even now the man carried himself with a warrior's deadly grace and exuded an easy going, at least partially constructed charm. He was notably pretty even with the abuse he'd been subjecting himself to most recently. Mihawk thought he was very likely a very capable swordsman when he wasn't busy despair drinking himself to death. Observation was a gift and a curse, internally Mihawk smiled at this man of passionate contradictions. "You're dehydrated. Day drinking most immediately though there's more to it than just that... Mourning the loss of something, not your arm yet... someone then. I-" The man laughed, cutting off Mihawk's carefully constructed empathy statement. He fairly glowed, easy and cheerful, a well of something deep and devastated darting just under the surface like schooling fish. He raised one amused eyebrow. "Cute" Mihawk blinked, tried again. "I keep to myself. My cases will always be prioritized. I get bored easily and suffer dark moods. Sometimes I don't speak for hours or days on end, for my own reasons. I will speak again in my time. I don't care for guests, particularly unplanned, outside the execution of my work. Our arrangement shouldn't interfere with your rehabilitation." The man grinned, a little crooked self satisfied thing. Mihawk felt warm in his gut in a way he almost never did. The surprise of it made him growl "You're teasing me" The man's smile stretched effervescent "You noticed that did you?" Deciding he needed to get a better look at the man, Mihawk strode around the table to look directly in his eyes, take in the details of his face, categorize and memorize them. He gestured vaguely at the world outside the surprisingly electric dyad of them. "I-, yes. People don't usually tease me. I'm told, I can be mean. I would call it honest myself. I am not my brother's keeper" The man flinched minutely, before the perfect smile swallowed it again. Mihawk couldn't resist observing, commenting. "You have a brother... had. He's the one you lost then. Should I offer my condolences?" The man, still softly sad behind the eyes, smiled again, small but completely authentic this time. He rolled his eyes at the ghosts of his past. "Not a brother, not by blood, not exactly. I did lose him though, and miss him more than my arm. You got that part right. He'd hate condolences, parties only
