I did once try to read my mom's original language copies of Don Quixote and The Stranger. Didn't get very far.

There were only two books in my house that I was told were off limits - Little Birds by Anaïs Nin and Tropic of Cancer/Capricorn by Henry Miller. And yet I preferred the public library to the literal walls full of bookshelves at home.

I also read Helter Skelter in that era. Funnily enough, I read My Sweet Audrina in high school, but didn't pick up any of the Flowers in the Attic books until college.

She was on a list of authors we could pick from, and everyone had to pick a different author. I think I was absent the first day of picking, so the list was much smaller. But then again, I picked the actual book. Lol.
