To play devil's advocate, we use 'brain damaged', we call people 'stupid' and 'slow'. All of that is ableist. 'Brain damaged' is a medical diagnosis. All are attacking someone's innate intelligence that they have no control over. I don't see how the word is uniquely harmful in this way.
